1. Technology overview
Starburst is a US company founded in 2017 by the creators of Apache Trino and headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, building an enterprise data platform that lets organizations query data across many systems without first copying it into a central warehouse.
The platform layers ingestion, automated table maintenance, federated SQL query across more than 50 data sources, a data product catalog and a natural-language query interface on top of the open-source Trino engine, offered as managed SaaS or self-managed software. Customers such as British Airways, Citi and Comcast use it to run analytics directly on data lakes and existing databases.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
1. Federated query: single SQL query across 50+ data sources without ETL.
2. Fast ingestion: streams or batch-loads data into Iceberg tables in under a minute.
3. Automated table maintenance: serverless compaction and snapshot cleanup for lakehouse tables.
4. Data product catalog: tracks ownership, lineage and a semantic layer for shared datasets.
5. AI query interface: natural-language and MCP-based access for analysts and AI agents.
