1. Technology overview
Antora Energy is an industrial energy technology company founded in 2018 and headquartered in San Jose, California, United States. The company was built to help heavy industry, data centers, and utilities replace fossil fuel combustion by turning low-cost, intermittent renewable electricity into continuous industrial heat and power.
Antora’s factory-built thermal battery charges by resistively heating blocks of solid carbon to temperatures up to 2,400°C using cheap renewable electricity, then stores that energy for multiple days. Stored heat is discharged around the clock through radiative transfer, supplying process heat directly or driving steam turbines for firm power, serving customers in renewable fuels, food and beverage, data centers, chemicals, steel, mining, and pulp and paper, including the Project Big Stone deployment for biofuel producer POET in South Dakota.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
1. Carbon Thermal Battery: Stores energy as heat in blocks of solid carbon heated up to 2,400°C, an industrial material at roughly one-tenth the cost of lithium-ion.
2. Rapid Charging: Resistive heating lets the battery absorb the cheapest hours of renewable electricity in a fast charge cycle.
3. Multi-Day Storage: Modular carbon blocks hold energy for several days, supporting continuous industrial demand without downtime.
4. Heat and Power Delivery: Discharged heat supplies industrial processes directly or drives steam turbines for firm electricity.
5. Factory-Built Modules: Units are manufactured at Antora's San Jose facility and scale from megawatt to gigawatt loads with a compact footprint.
6. Cross-Industry Use: Systems serve renewable fuels, food and beverage, data centers, chemicals, steel, and mining, including the Project Big Stone plant for POET.
