1. Technology overview
Watershed is a US enterprise sustainability software company launched in 2019 in San Francisco by former Stripe employees Taylor Francis, Avi Itskovich and Christian Anderson. It was built to give large companies a rigorous, data-driven system for measuring carbon emissions and turning that data into disclosures and reduction plans, rather than relying on one-off consultant spreadsheets.
The Watershed platform ingests operational data and applies a library of more than 2 million emission factors to calculate Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, then automates disclosures across multiple regulatory frameworks and gives access to clean-energy and carbon-removal projects for reduction. AI agents assist with data cleaning and report drafting. Watershed manages more than 4 gigatons of CO2 for over 90 Fortune 500 companies, including Canva, Walmart, FedEx and BlackRock.
