1. Technology overview
Synthego is a genome engineering company founded in July 2012 in Redwood City, California, by former SpaceX engineers Paul Dabrowski and Michael Dabrowski along with Alex Pesch. It launched its CRISPRevolution product line in 2016 to make CRISPR gene editing reagents more consistent and accessible to researchers, addressing variability common in lab-made guide RNAs.
The company sells synthetic guide RNAs, engineered nucleases such as eSpOT-ON and hfCas12Max, base editors, and molecular biology reagents for isothermal amplification, PCR, and cell-free protein expression, serving academic and commercial researchers as well as cell and gene therapy developers; it also licenses CRISPR enzyme technology, including an agreement with AstraZeneca. Synthego filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May 2025 and its assets were acquired by Perceptive Advisors in July 2025, with the company continuing to operate under the Synthego brand.
