1. Technology overview
Castor was founded in 2012 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, by physician-researcher Derk Arts. It provides a clinical trial data platform for biopharma, medical device companies, contract research organisations and academic researchers, replacing paper and fragmented tooling with a single system for capturing and managing study data.
The platform bundles electronic data capture, electronic clinical outcome assessment and patient-reported outcomes, eConsent for remote enrolment, clinical data management, decentralised and hybrid trial support, and real-world evidence studies. Catalyst, the AI component, extracts source data from documents and electronic health records with human review. Castor reports more than 31,900 studies supported, over 9.5 million participants enrolled, 70,000 investigator sites and research activity in 171 countries, with 85 or more biopharma clients, 300 or more medtech clients and 55 CRO partners.
