1. Technology overview
Nostromo Energy is an Israeli energy-storage company founded in 2017 by Yaron Ben Nun, headquartered in Israel and listed on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange. It was created to help commercial buildings and data centers shift air-conditioning power use away from costly, grid-straining peak hours.
Its IceBrick system freezes water into ice using off-peak or surplus renewable electricity, then melts the ice during the day to supply cooling without running mechanical chillers. Installations are modular, combining 20 to more than 1,000 cells per site to deliver roughly 200 kilowatt-hours to over 10 megawatt-hour-equivalent of stored cooling, and the newer IceBrick 360 targets high-demand data centers.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
1. Ice-based storage: Water is frozen off-peak and melted during the day to deliver cooling.
2. Modular cells: Sites combine 20 to over 1,000 IceBrick cells depending on capacity needed.
3. Fast discharge: The system releases 94% of stored cooling energy within four hours.
4. High efficiency: Round-trip efficiency is reported above 85%.
5. Data-center variant: IceBrick 360 is engineered for high-density data-center cooling loads.
6. Service-based model: Nostromo installs and maintains units, billing through a share of energy savings over 20 years.
