1. Technology overview
CelluForce, founded in 2010 in Montreal as a joint venture between Domtar and FPInnovations, manufactures cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) extracted from wood pulp at its Windsor, Quebec plant. The company began commercial production in 2012 and reports the largest CNC production capacity in the world, at 300 dried metric tonnes per year, selling nanocellulose as a functional additive to manufacturers worldwide.
Its two product lines, CelluRods powder and liquid nanocrystals and CelluShield bio-based barrier coatings, are used to reinforce, thicken, stabilize, or add barrier and optical properties to materials. Customers span more than a dozen sectors including packaging, paints and coatings, personal care, oil and gas, adhesives, and plastics and composites.
