1. Technology overview
Eben Bayer and Gavin McIntyre, inspired by the bonding power of mycelium on wood chips, developed a process to use mycelium as a resin. In their class at Rensselaer’s Inventor’s Studio, they applied this method to create Greensulate, an eco-friendly alternative to polystyrene foams. Their company, Ecovative, initially funded by grants from ASME and NCIIA, created proof-of-concept samples, later securing support from NYSERDA and the EPA. Ecovative’s mission is to replace plastics with natural composites, creating sustainable, high-performance materials that reduce environmental impact.
