1. Technology overview
Capitalize is a New York-based fintech that digitises the 401(k) rollover. In the US, a 401(k) is an employer-sponsored retirement account; when someone changes jobs the account normally stays behind at the former employer’s recordkeeper, and moving it into an IRA — an individual retirement account the saver controls — has traditionally meant paperwork, phone calls and coordination between several institutions.
Capitalize automates that process: it locates a user’s forgotten 401(k) accounts, helps them choose and open an IRA at a partner provider, and then executes the transfer on their behalf. The consumer service is free, monetised through preferred-partner arrangements. The same engine is sold as an embedded Rollover API so banks, brokerages, robo-advisers and recordkeepers can offer in-product rollovers, and since 2026 as a platform for financial advisers to capture held-away retirement assets.
