1. Technology overview
Spiro is an electric-motorcycle and battery-swap company founded in 2022 and headquartered in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, backed by investment group Equitane. The company was created to replace fossil-fuel motorcycle taxis and delivery bikes across Africa with electric alternatives and the charging infrastructure needed to run them at commercial scale.
Spiro manufactures and sells electric motorcycles such as the Ekon 450M1 and operates a network of battery-swap stations where riders exchange a depleted battery for a charged one in under two minutes instead of waiting to charge. Vehicles are offered through outright purchase, lease-to-own plans and fleet financing arranged with local partners such as M-KOPA and KCB, and Spiro also supplies bikes under government boda-boda electrification programs. As of late 2025 it operates more than 1,500 swap stations across six African countries, serving individual riders, delivery fleets and logistics companies.
