1. Technology overview
Seven Clean Seas is an ocean-impact company that began in Singapore and was formally established as a business in 2019, after its founders started beach cleanups in 2018. It aims to stop plastic reaching the sea in Southeast Asia, where waste collection is weak along rivers and coasts, and has set a goal of removing 100 million kg of ocean plastic by 2030.
Companies fund plastic removal that is carried out through large river collection, riverine interception barriers, offshore recovery, coastal cleanups and household waste management, with materials recycling facilities in Indonesia. Projects run in Bintan, Batam and Bali in Indonesia and in Bangkok, Thailand. Removal is certified under Zero Plastic Oceans OBP and Social+ OBP and the Verra Plastic Waste Reduction Standard, with annual audits by Control Union, and partners log in to the Periscope data application launched in 2023. Clients include corporates in logistics, insurance, finance, hospitality and consumer goods.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- River and coastal collection: large river collection, interception barriers, offshore recovery and coastal cleanups.
- Household waste management: community collection services and education to stop leakage at source.
- Certified credits: projects certified under Verra PWRS and Zero Plastic Oceans OBP and Social+ OBP.

3. Potential application
Beverage and FMCG brands in Vietnam can link plastic removal to each product sold as part of sustainability marketing. Shipping, logistics and insurance companies can fund river barrier projects as certified CSR programmes. Hotels and resorts can fund coastal cleanups and household collection near their sites.
4. Benefits
Companies can fund verified removal of ocean-bound plastic and report it against recognised standards such as Verra PWRS and Zero Plastic Oceans OBP. Annual third-party audits by Control Union reduce the risk of unsupported claims. Removal can be tied to products, for example a fixed number of bottles removed per item sold, which supports marketing. Partners such as Jim Thompson reported 4,060 kg removed in two quarters, according to the site.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Southeast Asian rivers are among the largest sources of ocean plastic, and brands are moving from vague pledges to verified, standard-based plastic credits. The World Bank published guidance on plastic crediting in 2024, and EPR rules in Vietnam, the Philippines and Indonesia are pushing producers to show measurable recovery of packaging.
