1. Technology overview
Aflabox is an agrifood technology company founded in 2024 in Sassuolo, Italy, by Fabrizio Cardillo and Luca Alinovi to make on-site detection of aflatoxins, a group of carcinogenic mycotoxins that contaminate grain crops, accessible to smallholder farmers and small processors who previously had to send samples to a laboratory and wait days for results.
The Aflabox device combines UV and white-light imaging with an artificial intelligence model to analyse grain samples and return a contamination result with a geolocated, shareable digital report in under 90 seconds. Results feed a cloud dashboard that maps contamination risk across a supply chain, and the company sells to farmers, collection centres, food processors, exporters and public institutions, with commercial operations in Italy, Kenya and Nigeria.
