1. Technology overview
BactiBlock is an antimicrobial additive technology developed by Laboratorios Argenol, a Spanish manufacturer of silver-based active ingredients operating since 1939 and headquartered in Zaragoza, Spain. The BactiBlock line, created in 2009 to combine clay nanotechnology with silver chemistry, targets bacteria, mould and fungal growth on plastics and other materials used across food-contact and packaging applications.
The additive is based on silver-functionalized nanoclay that is compounded directly into polymer resins, films or coatings, giving finished packaging and food-contact surfaces built-in antimicrobial protection without a separate treatment step. Independent testing cited by the company shows reductions of up to 99.99 percent in bacteria and viruses on treated surfaces. BactiBlock has been registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for polymer applications and is supplied to converters serving the food service, packaging and other industrial sectors.
