1. Technology overview
Bcomp is a Swiss materials company founded in 2011 in Fribourg by materials science PhDs from EPFL. It develops flax-based natural fibre reinforcements that replace glass fibre and part of the carbon fibre used in structural and semi-structural composite parts, addressing the weight, cost and end-of-life issues of conventional reinforcements.
The portfolio centres on ampliTex technical fabrics, available in bi-axial, twill, unidirectional and hybrid weaves, and on powerRibs, a reinforcement grid modelled on leaf veins that raises bending stiffness with minimal added mass. Both lines are also supplied as polypropylene pre-impregnated versions for compression moulding at series volumes. Users include automotive and mass transport programmes at BMW, Polestar and Volvo, motorsport teams such as McLaren Racing and Mercedes-AMG, and marine, sports equipment and furniture manufacturers. The company is certified to IATF 16949, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 and closed a USD 40 million Series C in 2024.
