1. Technology overview
CMR Surgical was founded in 2014 in Cambridge, United Kingdom, to make robotic-assisted minimal access surgery practical inside ordinary operating theatres. The company designs, manufactures and sells the Versius Surgical System, addressing the cost, size and installation barriers that have kept surgical robotics confined to a small number of large hospitals.
Versius is built from small, modular and portable bedside arm units that are positioned independently for each procedure and driven from an open surgeon console. The portfolio also includes Versius Plus, Versius Energy, Vision for Versius and the Versius Digital Ecosystem. The system is approved for use across Europe, Australia and Brazil, is used in general surgery, colorectal, gynaecology and thoracic procedures, and the company announced in March 2026 that more than 45,000 patients had been treated globally. Buyers are hospitals and surgical departments.
