1. Technology overview
Energy Dome is a long-duration energy storage company headquartered in Milan, Italy, founded by CEO Claudio Spadacini together with co-founders Dario Rizzi and Francesco Oppici. It serves utilities and grid operators that need storage systems able to discharge electricity for many hours as they add more wind and solar generation.
Its CO2 Battery runs a closed thermo-mechanical cycle built from standard industrial equipment such as compressors and turbines. During charging, CO2 gas is compressed into liquid while the released heat is stored; during discharging, the CO2 expands through a turbine to generate electricity, delivering 8 to 24 hours of dispatchable capacity. The CO2 Battery Plus configuration reuses waste heat from a co-located gas turbine to push round-trip efficiency above 115 percent. Deployments include a 23 MW / 200 MWh project in Ireland with Google and projects with Alliant Energy in the United States.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
1. Long-duration discharge: Delivers 8 to 24 hours of dispatchable electricity from a single system.
2. Standard components: Built from off-the-shelf compressors, turbines and heat exchangers instead of exotic materials.
3. CO2 Battery Plus: Integrates with a co-located gas turbine to reuse waste heat and exceed 115% round-trip efficiency.
4. Utility-scale reference: Deployed at 23 MW / 200 MWh in Ireland with Google.
5. Grid partnerships: Works with utilities such as Alliant Energy and ENGIE.
6. Site flexibility: Can be sited independently of geography, unlike pumped hydro or compressed-air caverns.
