1. Technology overview
GLN International began in July 2021 as a spin-off from Hana Bank to build a global payment network, with Hana Bank, KB, Kakao Pay, Taishin and SuMi TRUST listed as founders and investors. Based in Gangnam, Seoul, it connects banks, e-wallets and merchant networks so that users can pay, withdraw cash and send money abroad with their home-country apps.
The network links Korean partner apps such as Hana Money, Toss, Kakao Pay, Naver Pay and Samsung Wallet with overseas banks and schemes, including BIDV in Vietnam, SCB in Thailand, BCEL in Laos, ACLEDA in Cambodia, Taishin in Taiwan, Liquid in Singapore, UnionPay and Alipay. It provides QR payment with real-time currency conversion, QR cash withdrawal at ATMs, remittance, and tuition and medical bill payment. In April 2026 GLN integrated directly with NAPAS's VietQR Global, letting Korean app users pay at Vietnamese merchants, with Hana Bank as the SBV-approved settlement bank.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Global QR payment: Lets partner app users pay overseas merchants with real-time currency conversion.
- QR cash withdrawal: Allows ATM withdrawals abroad by scanning a QR code.
- Remittance: Moves money between home and overseas accounts.
- Tuition and medical payment: Pays overseas school and hospital bills through home e-wallets.
- National QR integration: Connects directly to schemes such as Vietnam's VietQR Global.
- Partner network: Links Korean banks and wallets with banks and schemes in 14 countries.
3. Potential application
Restaurants, hotels and shops in Da Nang, Nha Trang, Phu Quoc and Ho Chi Minh City can accept payments from Korean tourists using Toss or Hana apps. A Vietnamese bank or wallet can partner with GLN so its users can pay by QR in Korea. A Vietnamese university or hospital serving Korean clients can collect fees through home-country wallets.
4. Benefits
Merchants in Vietnam that display VietQR Global can accept Korean visitors without card terminals or currency exchange. Banks and wallets reach acceptance in 14 Asian countries and more than 200 million QR merchants through one network instead of bilateral links. Travellers' payments are converted in real time, and inbound flows also let Vietnamese users pay by QR in Korea.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Korea is one of Vietnam's largest sources of international visitors, and both central banks are backing QR links so travellers can pay with home apps. Across Asia, national QR schemes are being connected through network operators rather than card rails, lowering costs for merchants and wallets.
