1. Technology overview
Insignia Technologies is a materials-science company that traces its roots to 2008 and took its current form in 2012 in Scotland, through the merger of Insigniapack and Novas Technologies, a spin-out from the University of Strathclyde’s smart-pigment chemistry research. Based at BioCity Scotland, it was created to solve a basic food-safety gap: a printed best-before date cannot show whether a specific pack has actually stayed fresh, so usable food is discarded while mishandled food can still look fine.
Its flagship product, FreshTag, is a printed label applied directly to food packaging that changes colour as it accumulates real time-and-temperature exposure, giving retailers, foodservice buyers and shoppers a visual freshness signal instead of a fixed date. The same colour-change pigment platform is adapted into SafeTag for sterilisation-compliance timing in healthcare and DTX tape for spotting refrigerant leaks, and all are supplied as ready-to-apply components to food, beverage and packaging manufacturers.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
1. FreshTag label: colour-changing indicator that tracks real cumulative time-and-temperature exposure of a packaged food product.
2. SafeTag: the same colour-change chemistry adapted to signal sterilisation-compliance timing in healthcare settings.
3. DTX leak-detection tape: colour-change tape that flags refrigerant or CO2 leaks in cold-chain and packaging equipment.
4. Patented smart-pigment platform: chemistry originating from University of Strathclyde research, licensable for custom formulations.
5. Production-line ready: labels are supplied as components that food, beverage and packaging manufacturers apply during normal production.
6. Waste reduction: gives retailers and shoppers a visual freshness cue beyond a fixed printed date, reducing premature discards.
