1. Technology overview
Kanop is a geospatial intelligence company founded in 2021, with offices in Paris, France and New York. Measuring, reporting and verifying carbon and biodiversity in forest projects has traditionally depended on field plots and manual paperwork, which is expensive, slow and hard to audit at the scale that carbon standards and supply chain rules now demand.
The platform estimates aboveground biomass and its change over time from satellite data. Sentinel-2, Landsat, Sentinel-1 SAR and PALSAR-2 imagery is combined with deep learning models trained on 125 million hectares of LiDAR data across 76 countries, producing estimates at 30 metre or 10 metre resolution with 95 percent confidence intervals at pixel level. Independent validation across 110 sites and more than one million hectares reports an RMSE of 41.7 tonnes of dry matter per hectare with an R-squared of 0.73. Two use cases are served: nature-based carbon projects, covering eligibility screening, baselines, quantification and monitoring for reforestation, avoided deforestation, improved forest management and blue carbon; and commodity supply chain monitoring for land use change and deforestation risk. Kanop is a Verra-vetted data service provider for VM0047 dynamic baselines, and named clients include Ecosia, EticWood, Mars, Schneider Electric and Shell.
