1. Technology overview
Nofence AS is a Norwegian agricultural technology company founded in 2011 in Batnfjordsora, Norway, building on a virtual-fencing concept first developed by farmer Oscar Hovde Berntsen. It was created to let cattle, sheep and goat farmers manage grazing without building or maintaining physical fences, opening access to rough or remote pasture and cutting the manual labour of herding.
The product is a solar-powered, GPS-enabled collar paired with a smartphone app on which farmers draw virtual pasture boundaries on a map; the collar gives an animal an audio cue and then a mild pulse as it nears the boundary, while the app streams real-time location and grazing data for the whole herd. Approved for goats since 2017 and for cattle and sheep since 2020, the system is sold on subscription to livestock farms in Norway, the UK, Ireland, Spain and the United States.
