1. Technology overview
P2i is a British surface engineering company founded in 2004 and headquartered in Oxford, with an Asia-Pacific operation in Shenzhen. Its technology traces back to Stephen Coulson’s doctoral research at Durham University on liquid-repellent surfaces, and it addresses liquid ingress and corrosion failures in electronic assemblies that are increasingly dense and difficult to seal mechanically.
The company supplies two coating families. A plasma process deposits a covalently bonded barrier only nanometres thick across every surface of a device, applied dry at room temperature and available in PFAS-free chemistries; a liquid barrier coating suits existing spray and dip lines. Both are positioned as fully reworkable and as reducing masking requirements. Target markets are consumer electronics, automotive printed circuit board assemblies, medical devices and industrial IoT. P2i states its coatings have protected over ten billion devices, including more than 100 million hearing aids, and it deploys equipment inside customer factories.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
1. Plasma nano-coating: covalently bonded barrier nanometres thick, applied dry at room temperature.
2. PFAS-free chemistries: plasma coating options formulated without per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances.
3. Liquid barrier coating: alternative chemistry compatible with existing spray and dip production lines.
4. Reworkability: coatings described as 100% reworkable and as reducing component masking needs.
5. Deployment model: factory-in-factory installation of coating equipment at customer manufacturing sites.
6. Track record: more than ten billion devices protected, including over 100 million hearing aids.
