1. Technology overview
Path Robotics was founded in 2014 by brothers Andy and Alex Lonsberry and is based in Columbus, Ohio. The company was created to address a shortage of skilled welders in manufacturing by building robots that can weld parts without pre-programmed paths for every joint.
Its welding cells, including the Obsidian product line, use computer vision and machine learning to locate parts, adapt to variation in fit-up, and weld autonomously on the shop floor. Systems are sold to manufacturers in heavy equipment, transportation, and metal fabrication that need to scale welding output without a proportional increase in skilled labor.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
1. Vision-guided welding: cameras and AI locate parts and joints before each weld.
2. Obsidian welding cells: turnkey robotic stations built for autonomous production welding.
3. Adaptive fit-up handling: robots adjust weld paths for variation between individual parts.
4. No offline programming: operators do not need to pre-teach a path for every part.
5. Target industries: heavy equipment, transportation, and metal fabrication manufacturers.
6. Shop-floor deployment: cells are installed directly on customer production lines.
