1. Technology overview
TOMRA Food is a division of TOMRA Systems ASA, a Norwegian company founded in 1972 and headquartered for its food unit in Leuven, Belgium. It addresses quality and yield loss in fresh and processed food packing lines, where manual sorting cannot reliably separate defects, foreign material and off-grade produce at industrial throughput.
The company builds sensor-based sorting and grading machines that combine cameras, lasers, near-infrared sensors and artificial intelligence to inspect food items in real time and remove defects, foreign objects and product that does not meet quality specifications. Its equipment is installed at close to 13,000 sites worldwide, serving processors of fresh produce such as fruit and berries as well as processed food such as nuts, potatoes and vegetables.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
1. Sensor fusion: combines camera, laser and near-infrared sensors to detect surface and internal defects.
2. AI-based grading: machine learning models classify product by size, shape, color and quality grade.
3. Foreign material removal: identifies and ejects non-food material such as stones, plastic and glass.
4. Steam peeling integration: offers integrated post-harvest steam peeling solutions for root vegetables.
5. Global install base: close to 13,000 sorting and grading units installed worldwide.
