1. Technology overview
Backbase is a Dutch software company founded in Amsterdam in 2003 that licenses a digital banking platform to financial institutions. Rather than replacing the core, it sits above existing cores and channels and unifies onboarding, servicing and retail and SME journeys in a single layer, so banks can modernise progressively instead of running a full system replacement. The company is privately held, employs over 2,000 people across 16 offices on five continents, and runs its APAC headquarters from Singapore.
The product, the Engagement Banking Platform now marketed as an AI-native Banking OS, supplies prebuilt customer journeys plus an integration layer that coordinates work across fragmented core, channel and third-party systems. More than 120 financial institutions run on it. Vietnam is one of its strongest markets: Techcombank went live in 2021 for 5.5 million retail customers and now generates over half of savings and investment volume through digital banking, OCB launched its Omni 4.0 app in six months, and TPBank and ABBANK are also customers, alongside BDO Unibank, Bank of the Philippine Islands, EastWest Bank and HDFC Bank.
