When young people choose their starting point again: Social innovation is the quiet catalyst reshaping the future of migration

The “Youth Initiatives for Safe Migration and Anti-Human Trafficking” Program – Season 3, Business & Entrepreneurship Component has strongly empowered the journey of transforming mindsets and generating practical value among Vietnam’s young generation.

Behind the dream of “leaving home to build a new life,” there are sometimes devastating traps of human trafficking. Rather than gambling their futures on uncertain journeys, a generation of young Vietnamese is bravely choosing to stay. Through entrepreneurship and social innovation, they are putting down roots in their hometowns, turning community challenges into sustainable business models that create real livelihoods and meaningful social impact.

This journey of mindset change and tangible value creation has been powerfully supported by the programme “Youth Initiatives Promoting Safe Migration and Human Trafficking Prevention” - Season 3, Business and Entrepreneurship Component, organised by IOM Vietnam, with funding from the UK Government, and BambuUP is proud to be the implementation partner.

The programme attracted 140 applications from 28 provinces and cities across Vietnam. From these, 11 outstanding initiatives were selected for a 5-month acceleration journey.

Each project received over 90 hours of in-depth mentoring from nearly 20 experts and was connected to more than 250 partners within the innovation ecosystem.

The multi-dimensional social impact of the programme is most clearly illustrated through three core pillars. In each, we see ambitious young people quietly transforming the economic and social landscape of their local communities.

Creating green livelihoods and unlocking local economic potential

Lack of local job opportunities is one of the main reasons many rural youth turn to irregular labour migration, often paying hundreds of millions of dong in fees.

S2M - the project producing bio-leather from mango peels in Vinh Long - is a standout example of how innovation can solve this problem.

Vinh Long is a major mango-growing region, producing hundreds of thousands of tonnes annually. This generates thousands of tonnes of discarded peels that pollute the environment, while tens of thousands of local workers struggle with unemployment.

Recognising this paradox, the S2M team developed technology to transform agricultural waste into vegan leather for the fashion industry.

At the start of the programme, S2M was full of passion but facing a serious mindset crisis. The team was focused solely on direct-to-consumer sales of individual wallets and bags (B2C), which limited revenue, exhausted the team, and prevented scaling.

With strategic guidance from the programme’s experts, S2M made a pivotal shift: moving entirely from B2C to a B2B model supplying material to businesses.

In just three months, S2M secured dozens of B2B partners and over 20 trial orders, increasing revenue tenfold. The team grew from 5 to 16 members, operational efficiency rose 300%, and more than 500 kg of mango peels were collected and recycled, creating additional income for farmers and indirect jobs for local workers.

From discarded agricultural waste, an entirely new value chain was born, proof that young people can build a future right at home.

Preserving cultural heritage through innovative business thinking

In many parts of rural Vietnam, the decline of traditional crafts is eroding cultural identity and breaking generational continuity. Young people leave for cities, leaving elderly artisans and centuries-old knowledge to fade away.

Bạc Hôme has emerged as a shining example of reviving the silver-chasing craft village of Đồng Xâm in Hưng Yên (formerly Thái Bình).

Through the programme’s incubation platform, the team received deep mentoring to clarify their core values and streamline their product range. They realised they were not just selling handicrafts, they were selling a centuries-old heritage story.

They focused on high-utility signature products and launched the experiential cultural programme “Echoes of Ancient Silver-Chasing.”

The power of storytelling combined with professional operations delivered impressive results: over 100 people signed up for experiences, with a 95% satisfaction rate.

Most notably, Bạc Hôme has become a vital bridge, securing more than 10 direct orders for artisans. The project has built a strong network of over 50 members, including artisans, media partners, and student ambassadors, creating stable jobs for 40-50 local workers and young people.

By breathing new life into Đồng Xâm village, Bạc Hôme has proven that cultural preservation can go hand in hand with real economic benefits.

Equipping workers with skills and protecting them from social risks

Unsafe migration is not only about illegal border crossings, it also hides in domestic migration when rural workers move to industrial zones and face countless traps.

Loom for Women was born from this concern, targeting female factory workers in Ho Chi Minh City who have left their hometowns to earn a living but lack the “armour” to protect themselves.

From an initial idea, the project - guided by the programme’s expert mentoring - evolved into a long-term social intervention model. It delivers two practical workshops: “Identifying and Preventing Online Scams” and “First Aid in the Workplace.”

Before the programme, 100% of participants had been victims or targets of scams. After the training, 85% reported a dramatic improvement in their ability to recognise risks and in their self-confidence.

The project has directly reached 45 female workers and connected 35 into a long-term support community. By weaving a safety net of knowledge, Loom for Women is helping women far from home feel more confident in protecting themselves and their livelihoods.

Looking back, the programme has done far more than incubate young businesses. It has planted seeds of resilience and national pride across the country.

From mango-peel leather in the Mekong Delta, to the silver-chasing artistry preserving a hundred-year soul in Hung Yen, to skills workshops lighting hope for female workers amid the noise of factories - these stories form a powerful chorus of a generation driving social innovation.

Từ tấm vải da làm từ vỏ xoài ở miền Tây, những nét chạm trổ lưu giữ hồn cốt trăm năm ở Thái Bình, cho đến những lớp học thắp sáng hy vọng cho nữ công nhân nơi xưởng máy ồn ào, tất cả quy tụ thành một bản hòa ca đầy sức sống của thế hệ thanh niên đổi mới sáng tạo.

With the support of IOM Vietnam, the UK Government, and the One-stop Innovation Platform BambuUP, young Vietnamese are proving that, when given the right opportunity and mindset, they can solve the most pressing challenges of our time with their own hands, turning their hometowns into safe, prosperous destinations where no one has to risk their life for a chance at a better future.

Population aging is quietly reversing the global growth logic. When older people not only live longer but are also healthier, more independent, and possess increasingly powerful purchasing power, “old age” is no longer merely a social welfare narrative. From this shift, the Silver Economy has emerged, opening up a vast new space for innovation, investment, and long-term sustainable development.
